Summer break is an exciting time for kids, but it can also be a time when access to nutritious meals is limited. Fortunately, the Summer Food Service Program in Rapid City is here to help! Offering free, healthy meals to children and teens aged 18 and under, this program ensures that young people in Rapid City have the fuel they need to learn, play, and grow throughout the summer months. And thanks to partnerships with Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota and Black Hills Area Community Foundation, even seniors accompanying grandchildren and adults accompanying children can eat at no charge at select locations. Important Weather Note: Due to the inclement weather on 7/2/24 we will not serve food truck meals at Lacroix Links and Robbinsdale Park. Thank you! Please also remember that our mobile food truck service is weather-dependent. In case of severe weather such as lightning within 5 miles or extreme temperatures, we may need to cancel service for safety. Who is eligible for these free meals?
- Kids and Teens: Anyone 18 years of age and under can receive free meals.
- Seniors: Seniors aged 60 and over who are accompanying their grandchildren are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, thanks to our partnership with Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota.
- Accompanying Adults: Adults aged 19-59 who are accompanying their children can receive free lunch, as long as funding from the Black Hills Area Community Foundation is available.
Do all locations serve both breakfast and lunch?
- Not all sites serve both meals. Some locations offer both breakfast and lunch, while others only offer lunch. Please refer to the “2024 Sites and Serving Times” section above for details on which meals are served at each location.
What kind of food is served?
- Breakfast: At locations serving breakfast, we offer a nutritious meal consisting of a grain, fruit, and milk.
- Lunch: Lunch options vary and may include either a hot or cold meal. All lunches include a grain, protein, fruit or vegetable, and milk to ensure a balanced and satisfying meal.
What happens during bad weather at the food truck locations?
- Your safety is our top priority! If there is lightning within 5 miles of a food truck site, we will close that site. We also may need to cancel service unexpectedly due to other unforeseen weather conditions like extreme heat or storms. We will update our website with any cancellations as quickly as possible.
