Emergency Food Stamps: Your Guide to SNAP Benefits in NYC

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, is a vital resource for nearly 1.8 million low-income New Yorkers. This program is designed to combat food insecurity by helping families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities afford nutritious food. As the 2024-2029 Federal Farm Bill discussions continue, it’s crucial to understand how SNAP benefits, including emergency food assistance, can support you and your family.

The City of New York is actively advocating against potential cuts to SNAP funding, urging Congress to maintain or even increase current levels. This commitment highlights the critical role SNAP plays in our community.

Understanding Your SNAP Benefits and EBT Card

Once your application for Cash Assistance and SNAP is approved, you will receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card in the mail. This card works like a debit card and is loaded with your monthly SNAP benefits, allowing you to purchase groceries at authorized retailers.

If you need your EBT card urgently and haven’t received it in the mail yet, you have options:

  • Permanent EBT Card: Visit the Brooklyn OTC site to obtain your permanent card.
  • Temporary EBT Card: Go to one of the seven open center locations to receive a temporary card. This card will be pre-loaded with your benefits, giving you immediate access until your permanent card arrives. You can find a list of locations here.

For any inquiries about your case, please remember that the Human Resources Administration (HRA) requires a Client Consent Form to verify your consent before releasing any information to a third party.

Beware of Scams: It’s important to be vigilant against scams, especially those related to COVID-19 or EBT cards. Scammers may try to steal your personal information. Stay informed about potential fraud and scam alerts here and learn how to protect your benefits from skimming with this flyer:
