Roadrunner Food Bank: Supporting MSU Denver Students and Combating Food Insecurity

Rowdy’s Corner, formerly known as the Roadrunner Food Pantry, stands as a vital resource at Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver), dedicated to ensuring that no student faces hunger. This initiative provides crucial food support and holistic resources within a welcoming and respectful environment on the Auraria campus. Driven by compassion and generosity, Rowdy’s Corner addresses the evolving needs of the student community, fostering growth, autonomy, and dignity for every individual it serves.

Rowdy’s Corner Mission: A Holistic Approach to Student Support

At the heart of Rowdy’s Corner is a mission to create more than just a food distribution center. It aims to be a comprehensive resource hub for MSU Denver students. The core tenets of their mission include:

  • Creating a Welcoming Space: Offering a safe and inclusive environment where students feel comfortable seeking assistance.
  • Providing Holistic Resources: Going beyond just food, connecting students with various support services available within the university and the wider community.
  • Meeting Community Needs with Compassion: Responding to food insecurity with empathy and understanding, recognizing the diverse circumstances of students.
  • Promoting Growth and Autonomy: Empowering students by providing resources that support their overall well-being and self-sufficiency.
  • Serving with Dignity and Respect: Ensuring every student is treated with courtesy and respect, destigmatizing the need for food assistance.
  • Adapting to Changing Needs: Continuously evolving its services and offerings to meet the dynamic needs of the MSU Denver student population.
  • Sustainable Practices: As a student-led initiative, Rowdy’s Corner is committed to reducing food waste on campus through sustainable and responsible practices.
  • Building a Hunger-Free Community: Aspiring to create a campus environment where no student experiences hunger, fostering a healthy and thriving community for all.

Rowdy’s Corner embodies a vision to reimagine food support for students, challenging stigmas associated with seeking help and working towards a future where “Food for All” is a reality at MSU Denver.

Connecting Students to a Network of Support

Recognizing that food insecurity is often interconnected with other challenges students may face, Rowdy’s Corner collaborates closely with the Student Care Center. This partnership ensures that students accessing the food bank can also be connected to a broader network of support services, both on and off campus. Sponsored by Student Engagement and Wellness, the Student Advocacy Council, and the MSU Denver Community, Rowdy’s Corner is deeply integrated into the university’s support system, enhancing student wellbeing on multiple levels.

Commitment to Quality and Cultural Relevance

Rowdy’s Corner is dedicated to providing nutritious and culturally appropriate food options. They prioritize sourcing products from local and regional businesses, contributing to the local economy while ensuring fresh and high-quality food. Understanding the diverse dietary needs of the student body, Rowdy’s Corner strives to offer a range of options, including vegan, vegetarian, Halal, and Kosher foods, as well as items that cater to various cultural backgrounds and dietary restrictions or allergies.

The History of Roadrunner Food Bank: From Humble Beginnings to Campus Staple

The origins of the Roadrunner Food Bank trace back to the fall of 2007 when Kyle Haley, a Student Government Assembly (SGA) leader, recognized a growing concern: food insecurity among MSU Denver students. Many students, often overlooked by traditional social safety nets, faced increasing challenges accessing food, especially as the economic climate worsened. Haley’s proposal to create a campus food bank was groundbreaking, as few universities at the time had such resources for their students.

Initial Launch and Restructuring

The first iteration of the food bank launched in the spring of 2008, operating under the SGA’s supervision with support from the Office of Student Activities. Run by a student coordinator from a small closet, the initial effort faced challenges in raising awareness and securing consistent support. Recognizing the need for a more robust structure, the food bank temporarily paused operations for restructuring.

The Office of Student Life (now Student Engagement & Wellness) took on the responsibility of revitalizing the initiative, with continued funding and collaboration from the SGA. The Metro State Food Bank reopened in the fall of 2008 in a new location within the Tivoli Student Union, staffed by two student coordinators to manage the demands of the program.

Evolution to Roadrunner Food Pantry and Expansion

In the summer of 2018, the Metro State Food Bank underwent a significant transformation, being renamed the Roadrunner Food Pantry. This coincided with a move to a larger and more visible space in Tivoli 262. The expanded location significantly improved accessibility and allowed for a wider range of services. A student-designed window cling was implemented to ensure privacy for students utilizing the pantry. Crucially, funding from the Dean of Students Office in the 2018-2019 academic year enabled the pantry to purchase a greater variety of food options to better meet student needs.

Integration with Student Care Center and Continued Growth

Fall 2019 marked another pivotal moment as the Roadrunner Food Pantry became a part of the newly established Student Care Center, further solidifying its role as a central student support service. The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, requiring staff to innovate and adapt to continue providing food assistance to students during a time of heightened need. In Spring 2021, partnerships with local organizations were forged to enhance the quality and variety of food offerings.

The 2021-22 academic year witnessed a dramatic increase in student utilization, more than doubling the number of students served. To accommodate this growth and better serve the MSU Denver community, Rowdy’s Corner secured a lease for a new, larger space. On November 29th, 2022, Rowdy’s Corner, formerly Roadrunner Food Pantry, opened its doors in Tivoli 271, marking the latest chapter in its ongoing commitment to combating student food insecurity and fostering a supportive campus environment.
