Volunteer for Community Service at Oregon Food Bank

Are you looking to fulfill court-mandated community service or other volunteer hour requirements? Oregon Food Bank provides structured opportunities to give back to the community through volunteering.

We organize food repackaging and sorting volunteer shifts at our warehouse facilities. These shifts are typically 2-3 hours long and available Monday through Saturday with scheduled times. You can find and sign up for these On-site Volunteer Shifts online.

Furthermore, Oregon Food Bank collaborates with a network of partner agencies that need volunteer support at local food pantries and market events throughout the Portland Metro area. The days and hours for these opportunities vary depending on the location and agency needs. Please note that some partner agencies may require proof of vaccination. For detailed information, refer to the “About this event” section when signing up for Off-site Volunteer Shifts.

Important Eligibility Information

Oregon Food Bank has specific guidelines regarding the types of charges we can accommodate for community service volunteers. We are unable to accept volunteers who have charges related to acts of violence, bias and hate crimes, weapons and firearm offenses, or sexual misconduct. This policy is in place to ensure the safety and well-being of our staff, volunteers, and the community we serve.

How to Participate in the Court Mandated Program

Once your application to volunteer is approved, you will gain access to sign up for available shifts. It is crucial to register for all volunteer shifts in advance as spaces are limited. Walk-in volunteers may not be accommodated. To ensure a smooth process and compliance with court requirements, please adhere to the following program rules:

Court Mandated Program Rules: Failure to comply with these rules may result in immediate dismissal from the program.

  • Shift Sign-Up: You must sign up for all volunteer shifts in advance through our Volunteer Online Action Center. Eligible shifts for the court-mandated program include Food Repack/Sort shifts at our Beaverton and NE Portland warehouses, DigIn! Garden shifts at our northeast and Beaverton gardens, and support roles at off-site partner agencies.

  • Shift Procedures: During each volunteer shift, you are required to:

    • Sign in with the designated volunteer coordinator upon arrival.
    • Accurately log your volunteer hours on the Oregon Food Bank court-mandated paper timesheet. Ensure the shift coordinator initials your timesheet to verify your hours at the end of each shift. If you need a timesheet, ask the coordinator for assistance.
    • For volunteers working at off-site partner agencies, you must obtain a timesheet from the volunteer team prior to your scheduled shifts. Please request this by emailing us at [email protected].
  • Timesheet Responsibility: It is your responsibility to request and manage your court-mandated paper timesheet from the shift coordinator. Your timesheet must remain on-site at the Oregon Food Bank warehouse unless you are volunteering at partner agencies.

  • Credited Hours: You will only receive credit for the actual hours you work. Shift durations may occasionally be shorter than scheduled due to food supply levels. Please note that travel time to and from the volunteer site does not count towards volunteer hours.

  • Absence Policy: A strict limit of only two unexcused absences is permitted within the program. If you are unable to attend a scheduled shift, you are required to cancel your registration online. Cancellations made online do not count as absences.

  • Zero Tolerance for Misrepresentation: Oregon Food Bank maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding any misrepresentation of volunteer hours. Accurate reporting is essential for program integrity.

By following these guidelines, you can successfully complete your community service requirements at Oregon Food Bank while contributing to our mission of alleviating hunger in Oregon. We appreciate your dedication and service to our community.
