Addressing Global Food Security: The University of California’s Initiative

The challenge of feeding a growing global population in a sustainable and nutritious way is one of the most pressing issues of our time. With the world population projected to reach eight billion by 2025, ensuring Global Food security is paramount. The University of California (UC) Global Food Initiative directly tackles this critical issue.

Launched in July 2014 by former UC President Janet Napolitano and the university’s 10 chancellors, the UC Global Food Initiative unites the vast resources of the University of California system – including its ten campuses, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the UC Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. This collaborative effort leverages UC’s extensive expertise across diverse fields, from agriculture and medicine to public policy and climate science, to develop and implement solutions for food security, health, and environmental sustainability both in California and worldwide.

The initiative’s core mission is to drive tangible change through research, outreach, and practical application. It aims to identify, develop, and share best practices related to global food systems. By fostering collaboration across disciplines, the UC Global Food Initiative enhances the university’s existing efforts and pioneers new approaches to address complex food challenges. This includes exploring how UC research can inform effective policies and empower communities to adopt more sustainable eating habits. Internally, the initiative also examines UC’s own operations, seeking to leverage its collective resources and dining practices to promote desirable and sustainable outcomes.
