Discover the Best Food Places in Sayulita: A Culinary Journey

Sayulita, Mexico, a charming surf town nestled on the Pacific coast, is more than just a haven for wave riders. For me and many others, it’s a culinary paradise. In this relatively small area, the sheer concentration of incredible food options is astounding, boasting over 100 distinct eateries to discover.

Over years of exploration, I’ve made it my mission to sample nearly every restaurant and food stall Sayulita has to offer. From hidden gems to local favorites, this guide is designed to navigate you through the Best Food Places in Sayulita. I’ve categorized them by cuisine and budget, starting with my personal go-to spots, all conveniently located in and around the bustling center of Sayulita.

Navigating Food Safety and Water Concerns in Sayulita

It’s important to address food health and safety, a common concern for travelers. I often receive feedback on my Sayulita food recommendations, and occasionally, someone mentions experiencing illness after eating at a local restaurant. It’s crucial to have realistic expectations when traveling abroad. Mexican cuisine and spices may differ significantly from what you’re accustomed to.

However, in my experience, Sayulita maintains food sanitation standards that are comparable to, if not exceeding, many other places in Mexico I’ve visited. My friends and I have consistently dined at these establishments without issue. While isolated incidents can occur anywhere, they shouldn’t deter you from enjoying the diverse culinary offerings of Sayulita. Just be mindful and listen to your body.

Regarding water safety in Sayulita, it’s generally advisable to err on the side of caution. Unless explicitly stated that tap water is safe to drink at your hotel or Airbnb, it’s best to avoid it. Most residences and restaurants provide filtered water in large dispensers.

Restaurants typically use filtered water for drinking and ice, making it generally safe to enjoy beverages with ice, including those refreshing margaritas and agua frescas. Even street vendors selling agua frescas in large coolers usually utilize filtered water, making them safe to enjoy.

My Top Picks: Favorite Restaurants in Sayulita

When asked for recommendations, these are the places that immediately come to mind. I frequent these spots regularly, and they are listed in no particular order, each offering a unique and delicious experience.

1. El Itacate. El Itacate is a must-visit, particularly renowned for its arrachera. You have the choice of enjoying it in traditional homemade tortilla tacos or the signature “El Itacate,” where the arrachera is encased in a crispy fried cheese shell instead of a tortilla.

Vegetarians and meat-eaters alike will appreciate their flavorful hibiscus taco. They generously provide trays of salsas, beans, fire-grilled onions, and pico de gallo to customize your tacos to perfection. It’s my first stop every time I arrive in town.

Update: El Itacate has expanded to a new, larger location with increased seating. While I slightly miss the charm of the original bustling street-side spot, the new location offers enhanced comfort and a quieter ambiance.

2. Mary’s Tacos. Mary’s Tacos (location on map) boasts some of the best and most satisfying shrimp and fish tacos in Sayulita. Everything is expertly cooked and generously topped with fresh, vibrant ingredients. Two tacos are usually enough to fill me up.

My personal favorites include the Sayulita Taco and the Cazuelita, a substantial bowl brimming with vegetables and rice. You can opt for the vegetarian version or add any of their proteins. I particularly love the vegetarian and shrimp variations.

3. La Fogonera. When indecision strikes, I often find myself at La Fogonera (location on map), affectionately nicknamed “Techno Taco” due to its usual house and techno soundtrack. Don’t expect formal seating or upscale service, but this food truck eatery is a local institution.

I primarily visit for the burgers, arguably my favorite in town, but their quesadillas and tacos are also excellent choices. Vegetarians rave about the hibiscus and zucchini options for both quesadillas and burgers – and I concur! They also offer kombucha, and their agua fresca is consistently delicious.

4. Barracuda. Barracuda, situated on Calle Delfines (location on map), is one of Sayulita’s most refined dining experiences. It serves some of the best seafood in the area.

If you only have time for one upscale meal in Sayulita, Barracuda (Instagram: Barracuda Sayulita) is my top recommendation.

Having sampled most of their menu, I highly recommend the seafood molcajete – a volcanic stone bowl filled with jumbo prawns, octopus, arrachera steak, bacon-wrapped peppers, and generous portions of queso, all immersed in a delectable sauce.

The chicharron de pescado is another standout, and the tuna sashimi makes for a perfect fresh starter. For a quick lunch, I suggest the pepito de arrachanera (tender steak on a French baguette with chipotle sauce).

Complement your meal with a refreshing limonada (with sparkling mineral water) or a frozen mango margarita.

5. Anchor Cafe. When I need a spot to work while enjoying lunch, it’s usually a toss-up between Anchor Cafe (location on map) and Miscelanea, but Anchor Cafe slightly edges out.

They offer a tempting selection of sourdough toasts topped with diverse options, from avocado, poached eggs, and smoked salmon to bagels and ciabattas filled with Serrano ham, goat cheese, apples, and honey. I’m also a big fan of their chia cups, which are essentially chia pudding bowls topped with a thick fruit smoothie.

6. El Tiburon. It’s challenging to pinpoint just one standout dish here, as El Tiburon (location on map) is consistently excellent across the board. Their eclectic menu blends classic Mexican flavors with American and Tex-Mex influences. Surprisingly, their burger is one of the best I’ve had in Sayulita.

I also recommend their wachos, waffle fries loaded with carnitas and green onions. Overall, El Tiburon excels at classic dishes executed perfectly, paired with tasty cocktails.

7. Zingaro. A newer addition and a strong contender for the best Italian restaurant in Sayulita. While there are many Italian options, Zingaro (location on map) introduces authentic pasta dishes that were previously lacking, along with a remarkable Tiramisu.

Update: Zingaro is temporarily closed but will be reopening at a new location, details to be updated.

8. Alas Blancas. Alas Blancas offers unique dishes not found elsewhere, such as sweetbread and bone marrow tacos. With beachfront seating, it’s also an excellent choice for larger groups.

Travel Tip:

When booking accommodation in Sayulita, I consistently find the best prices on Expedia or Booking.com. I use this specific Booking.com search to filter for highly-rated options that I would personally consider.

Best Vegetarian & Vegan Places in Sayulita

For vegetarian travelers, Sayulita is surprisingly accommodating, offering numerous excellent vegetarian and vegan choices.

1. Anchor Cafe. Anchor Cafe is a vegetarian-friendly haven. Their smoothies, smoothie bowls, and chia options are all vegetarian, and their avocado toasts and bagels feature a variety of delicious vegetarian combinations. It’s an easy and healthy choice for breakfast or lunch.

2. Northswell Sabor Flavor. This plant-based gem (location on map) began as a vegan dessert shop specializing in gluten-free and refined sugar-free treats. While their desserts remain exceptional, they now have a full menu featuring crepes, bowls, tostadas, burritos, sandwiches, and salads, all at very reasonable prices.

Northswell Sabor Flavor has quickly risen in my rankings. I appreciate that the local owner, Clarissa, is also the chef and recipe creator.

3. Organi-k. Organi-k (location on map) was one of the pioneers in Sayulita for vegetarian and vegan bowl options, along with acai bowls. It remains a reliable and easy choice for vegetarians. I find their bowls reasonably priced for the portion size, although the smoothies are slightly on the pricier side.

4. Orangy. Located near my laundromat, Orangy (location on map) is a small juice bar serving incredibly thick and delicious smoothies and shakes. They also make their own energy balls.

Update: While I still enjoy Orangy, the quality can be inconsistent depending on who is working. Sometimes the smoothies are perfectly thick, other times they are watery. Portion sizes can also vary, which was noticeable when one smoothie was significantly less full than the other.

5. Attico. Attico (location on map) is not only one of the best outdoor bars for nightly live music, but it also has an underrated vegetarian menu. Try anything featuring yaca (jackfruit) or one of their bowls.

Portions are generous, prices are affordable, and ingredient quality is high. I was pleasantly surprised by the food the first time I ordered, having previously only visited for drinks and music. They also serve breakfast and lunch.

6. Chaman Creative Kitchen. A short walk from town on Calle del Palmar (location on map) leads you to Chaman Creative Kitchen, an outdoor garden restaurant with a diverse menu ranging from hibiscus tacos and portobello burgers to mezcal corn soup and cheese boards. It’s a fun spot for drinks and snacks with friends.

7. La Fogonera. This food truck serves one of my top two favorite burgers in Sayulita. Vegetarians will be tempted by their hibiscus and zucchini burger option, which sometimes lures me away from my usual meaty burger.

8. Mary’s. Order the cazuelita de vegetales and their refreshing jamaica (hibiscus) agua fresca at Mary’s.

9. El Jakal. While not strictly a vegetarian restaurant, El Jakal (location on map) is worth visiting for their jackfruit (yaca) dishes, especially the jackfruit with mole.

Note: Sayulita is generally vegetarian-friendly, and most restaurants offer enough vegetarian options to easily find something to enjoy.

Best Seafood Restaurants in Sayulita

These restaurants stand out not only for their exceptional seafood but also as some of the nicest dining establishments in Sayulita. While you don’t need to dress formally, you certainly could.

1. Barracuda. Barracuda remains my top seafood pick. The seafood molcajete is the primary draw, and I enjoy sharing multiple dishes with companions to experience the variety. The fish is consistently fresh, the catch of the day, and cooked to perfection. Every dish is a delight. If pulpo (octopus) is on the menu, be sure to order it. For fried options, I recommend the chicharron de pescado or the calamar Frito.

2. La Rustica. La Rustica (location on map) rivals Barracuda in terms of beautifully presented dishes. I love their use of blue and white enamel plates and bowls. While primarily an Italian restaurant, La Rustica serves what I consider the single best bite of fish taco in Sayulita.

The only slight drawback of these tacos is that they are almost too aesthetically pleasing to eat and a bit on the smaller side. I recommend ordering the grilled octopus and the mussels, which are served in a wonderfully creamy sauce. Update: The octopus seems to be off the menu currently, so definitely try the mussels and the tuna tartare instead.

3. El Pescador. El Pescador (location on map) is a newer, slightly hidden seafood spot, indicated by a sign downstairs directing you upstairs. Tucked away yet centrally located in the plaza with two levels of seating, it’s a solid choice for seafood and poke bowls. Their burritos are a great value, and everything is consistently tasty.

Update: El Pescador is currently closed.

4. Estrella De Mar. Hidden on Avenida del Palmar (location on map), Estrella De Mar is a beloved spot among locals and those in the know. You’ll find classic options like fresh tuna tostadas and ceviche, along with slightly unique variations of these favorites.

5. Kahlo. Kahlo (location on map) offers more than just seafood, making it ideal if your group desires a nice meal with diverse options. I particularly enjoy their Chipotle Shrimp and Seared Tuna. The Burrata Pizza is also excellent here.

Best Steak & Chicken Restaurants in Sayulita

1. Trattoria Toscana. Located directly across from Barracuda, Trattoria Toscana (location on map) is one of Sayulita’s numerous Italian restaurants. While I’m not particularly fond of their pastas, pizzas, or salads, it’s the place to go for a fantastic steak.

I recommend the reasonably priced and sized ‘Cowboy’ steak, which is like a smaller version of their impressive 1 kg Tomahawk.

2. El Itacate. My favorite taco spot appears again on another list. While you don’t get a whole steak like at Trattoria Toscana, El Itacate serves the best meat in any taco or burrito in Sayulita. Their arrachera is incredibly tender and melts in your mouth.

They serve such generous portions that I always split each taco into two. It’s the best taco value in town for the amount of meat you receive.

3. Rosticeria La Pechugas. Rosticeria La Pechugas (location on map) is a small chain specializing in rotisserie chicken. They focus on one dish and execute it exceptionally well. It’s hard to find better rotisserie chicken in Sayulita.

4. Pollos “Yolanda”. For flame-grilled chicken, follow the enticing smoke uphill from Attico (location on map). A quarter chicken plate with rice, coleslaw, and tortillas is usually sufficient for most. If you have a larger appetite, opt for half a chicken. You’ll find it by the giant grill on the street, piled high with rows of chicken.

Best Beachfront Restaurants in Sayulita

1. Alas Blancas. Alas Blancas (location on map) offers the best beachfront dining experience alongside Barracuda. Their dishes are beautifully presented and delicious. I highly recommend the costenas tacos, featuring a giant bone marrow topped with shrimp and octopus.

Their burgers are substantial, and they even have a unique fried sweetbread dish served with guacamole. I regularly return to explore their extensive menu.

2. Barracuda. Barracuda, one of my top restaurant picks in Sayulita, has two locations. While I still prefer the original location on Calle Delfines, the beachfront location offers essentially the same menu, but with the added bonus of being right on the sand.

3. Coco’s Beach Club. When I crave a comfortable lounge chair with a shaded umbrella and a large margarita, Coco’s Beach Club (location on map) is where my friends and I head. Even after spending months in Sayulita, visiting Coco’s feels like a true beach vacation.

They have a diverse menu, but I recommend their seafood tostadas and ceviches to complement your drinks.

4. El Patio. El Patio (location on map) is my favorite spot for a leisurely afternoon michelada. They provide a generous portion of michelada mix with a beer, and you can continue topping it off with additional beers as you enjoy. They also offer nice small plates for snacking.

5. Bar La Isla. Cross the river to discover a quieter, more rustic beachfront spot at Bar La Isla (location on map), which serves one of my favorite margaritas. Sometimes I simply come here to nap on the beach, then wake up for a drink and some tostadas.

6. El Costeno. El Costeno (location on map), constantly bustling, is located right off Calle Delfines as you reach the beach. It’s a no-frills beach restaurant serving generous portions of grilled fish and the largest margaritas you’ll find in Sayulita.

Resist the temptation of the extra grande margarita – it’s practically ten margaritas in one! El Costeno is popular with both locals and tourists and is one of the more affordable beachfront dining options.

Best Taco Spots in Sayulita

This is a highly subjective category, as everyone has their own taco preferences. I could have easily broken it down into multiple subcategories, but this list would become even longer. The only category I separated is “street tacos,” which you can find in the next section. Every place on this list uses handmade tortillas.

1. El Itacate. Little more needs to be said. El Itacate offers excellent tacos, regardless of your order.

2. Mary’s. Mary’s is my second favorite taco spot, particularly for their Baja-style fish and shrimp tacos. I enjoy the Sayulita Taco and the Mary’s Taco because of their generous toppings and delicious chipotle sauce.

3. Naty’s Cocina. Naty’s Cocina (location on map) serves many classic Mexican tacos that are surprisingly less common in Sayulita. This is likely because these dishes often require hours of preparation, offering a different type of dining experience.

This restaurant operates almost like a cafeteria, where you select your ingredients from various trays and bowls. My favorites are the mole and cactus tacos, which I can still vividly taste as I write this.

4. The Real Fish Taco. I almost wanted to dislike The Real Fish Taco due to its name and the smaller taco size, but when the fish is fresh, it’s truly excellent. However, consistency can vary depending on who is grilling the fish (location on map).

5. La Rustica. La Rustica, in my opinion, serves the most visually appealing gourmet tacos. For some, they might be considered slightly too fancy or small, but they are undeniably delicious and distinct from typical tacos in town.

6. Luna’s. Luna’s (location on map) offers classic taco meats like asada and adobado. Prices are already low, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the generous taco size. I often forget this and over-order.

Best Street Taco Spots in Sayulita

“Street tacos” typically refer to carts with a large rotating ‘trompo’ of meat, Mexico’s version of fast food and late-night eats. They are wonderfully greasy and delicious, and ending the night with a couple of these is always a good idea.

1. Tacos Tono. Tacos Tono (location on map) is a highly praised spot, well-loved by locals. Vegetarians and meat-lovers alike are drawn here, and despite my cholesterol concerns, I never regret a visit.

2. Tacos Tal Ivan. Everyone eventually ends up at Tacos Tal Ivan (location on map) as it’s located right by the main square and stays open until 3 am, perfectly catering to late-night cravings. It’s definitely part of the Sayulita nightlife experience.

3. Rinconcitos. Rinconcitos (location on map) has been a Sayulita staple for as long as I’ve been visiting. These ladies serve quick tacos during the day, and a new “restaurant” takes over in the evening.

4. Taqueria Los Reyes. Taqueria Los Reyes (location on map) is a small restaurant with a parilla grill, offering fresh meat to satisfy any carnivore, along with plenty of vegetarian options. Tortillas are handmade, portions are generous, and most importantly, the flavor is fantastic and prices are local-friendly.

5. Birria “Patty” Cart. When open, you’ll always find a small crowd around the Birria “Patty” Cart (location on map) during the day. They serve incredibly delicious, albeit artery-clogging, fried birria tacos.

6. Cabeza Cart. Another unnamed cart, usually located in front of Orangy earlier in the day. I love it for the cabeza (head) and lengua (tongue) tacos. They occasionally have sesos (brain) as well, which are my personal favorite.

7. Carnitas. Right before crossing the bridge (location on map), a small shack serves incredibly tender carnitas for just 20 pesos. I highly recommend it. Ignore the negative Google reviews complaining about midnight music – they aren’t even open at night. This place has been serving locals for years, and I’m glad it’s still around.

Best Burger Restaurants in Sayulita

Similar to tacos, burger preferences are highly personal. For me, the ideal burger features a steamed brioche bun, a runny egg, and plenty of toppings.

1. La Fogonera. La Fogonera easily takes the top spot for burgers, despite strong competition. They offer a selection of sirloin beef and vegetarian burgers on some of the best handcrafted brioche buns.

The buns are perfectly crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside, holding the well-seasoned patties and caramelized onions. I’m a fan of the Munchies burger with bacon and a fried egg (over easy), but the Hawaiian and Vegetarian options are equally amazing. Don’t forget to add their signature Chipotle Cremosa sauce.

2. El Tiburon. El Tiburon, an American/Tex-Mex spot tucked down a small alley, offers excellent comfort food. During my burger exploration, I ordered their Gringo burger and almost declared it my new Sayulita favorite. It was very close.

Their waffle fries are the best fries I’ve had in town. They use Coca-Cola onions instead of caramelized onions and serve it on a brioche bun.

The only minor drawback is that it’s on the pricier side for a burger, especially when adding extras like bacon, avocado, or a fried egg, particularly compared to La Fogonera.

3. Ruben’s Deli. Ruben’s Deli (location on map) is primarily a sandwich shop, but it’s my go-to for amazing hot sandwiches. Located in the center, you can smell their buttery, grilled sandwiches as you walk down Calle Delfines.

They offer numerous excellent choices like the Reuben, Patty Melt, and Pastrami. Their cold pasta selection is also impressive, but I always choose the Asian noodle salad.

4. Public House. Public House (location on map) is a sports bar and pub with a simple yet well-executed menu. I enjoy their Cobb Salad with fried chicken, but their burger is also well-made.

For vegetarians, they offer a decent Beyond burger with a plant-based patty that closely resembles real beef.

5. La Katrina. La Katrina (location on map) offers several burger options, with my favorite being the Sayulita Suprema topped with shrimp and chipotle sauce. It’s priced between La Fogonera and El Tiburon.

If reading this food guide is making you feel like you’ve indulged in extra calories, Sayulita offers many ways to stay active. Consider a surf lesson or a yoga session with Happy Yoga Sayulita.

Best Breakfast & Brunch Spots in Sayulita

1. Yah Yah. Yah Yah (location on map) is my favorite place for a peaceful breakfast and coffee away from the crowds. It’s also perfect for catching up with friends over coffee. I can’t praise this place enough, offering a wide range of options, from loaded bagels and croissants to beautiful Instagram-worthy bowls.

They also serve Vietnamese iced coffee, which automatically earns extra points in my book. It’s organic-friendly, vegan-friendly, gluten-friendly, and welcoming in every way, housed in a modern, high-ceilinged café. Update: They recently opened a second location across the bridge on Avenida Revolución.

2. Anchor Cafe. Anchor Cafe is my go-to for breakfast, brunch, or lunch on workdays. They close at 5 pm, and everything on their menu is excellent. Scroll back up to read more about why it’s on my “favorites” list.

3. Pakeke. Pakeke (location on map) is a newer spot with a simple menu executed exceptionally well. I regularly return for their thin pancakes (almost like crepes) and smoothies.

4. Orangy. When I need a nutrient-packed liquid breakfast, I turn to Orangy. Their smoothies are arguably the best in town and can be enhanced with protein powder.

5. Chocobanana. Chocobanana (location on map) is one of Sayulita’s oldest restaurants, named for their must-try chocolate-covered bananas. The more you order, the cheaper they become, so bring friends!

It’s a great spot if you’re craving familiar breakfast items from home. Sometimes you just want bacon and eggs or a full English breakfast instead of huevos rancheros or chilaquiles – and that’s perfectly fine.

6. Tierra Viva. Come to Tierra Viva (location on map) specifically for their Eggs Benedict. Everyone comes here for their Eggs Benedict. I personally enjoy mine with shrimp.

Best Spots for Large Groups & Celebrations

I often receive inquiries about venues for large groups or birthday celebrations, so here are my recommendations. For larger groups, I highly recommend calling ahead to make a reservation.

1. La Rustica. La Rustica is an easy recommendation due to its ample indoor seating, more than what’s visible from the street. Their dishes are consistently excellent, and some are personal favorites in Sayulita. It’s also one of the classier venues with a wide selection of cocktails and wine, ideal for celebrations.

Centrally located, you’ll often find street performers entertaining in front of the restaurant most nights. The only potential downside is that it’s always a busy spot. For something more private or intimate, consider the next option.

2. Casa Lvnae. Casa Lvnae (location on map) is one of Sayulita’s newest restaurants, contributing to the elevated dining scene. It’s a vibrant and elegant venue perfect for a date or special celebration.

3. Don Juan’s. Don Juan’s (location on map) is a local and expat favorite that many tourists miss as it’s not in the town center. The food is excellent, and parking is available. For group celebrations, it offers more privacy than most central locations like La Rustica.

It’s slightly outside of town, about a 10-minute walk down Calle Pelicanos and Nuevo Gallicia to the Punta Mita highway.

4. Alas Blancas. For a beachfront celebration, Alas Blancas is one of my top two choices, alongside Barracuda. The food is fantastic, and the location is perfect for sunset views. It’s on the main stretch of beach, so it can be crowded, but it doesn’t detract from the dining experience.

5. Barracuda. Barracuda now has two locations in Sayulita. The original location in town is my usual choice, but seating is more limited. While you might be able to secure a large reservation, I haven’t personally tried.

The second beachfront location is likely easier for larger groups. Barracuda is one of my favorite restaurants, so you can’t go wrong with any dish on their menu.

Best Italian Restaurants in Sayulita

For a Mexican town, Sayulita boasts a surprising number of quality Italian restaurants, all serving handmade pastas and thin-crust, oven-fired pizzas.

1. Zingaro. Zingaro is one of the newest Italian spots and has quickly established itself as a top contender. This place is exceptional, both in food and décor. During the day, they offer freshly toasted paninis and deli favorites alongside excellent espresso.

In the evening, it transforms into a lively spot for creative cocktails, fresh pasta, breads, and even homemade, hand-stretched burrata. Their tableside-made tiramisu is a must-try, along with some of the best cheeses in Sayulita. For a bit of culinary theater, don’t miss the cheese wheel they flambé for one of their pasta dishes.

Update: Zingaro is temporarily closed and plans to reopen in a new location.

2. Casa Lvnae. Casa Lvnae, the newest fine dining experience in Sayulita, comes from the owners of the popular Zingaro restaurant. Building on the success of their authentic Italian dishes, owners Dany and Vanessa have created one of Sayulita’s most elegant dining experiences. Definitely add this to your list.

3. L’Ulivo. L’Ulivo (location on map), an unassuming restaurant down a side street, has become one of my new favorite Italian spots – which is saying a lot.

The food and drinks are top-notch, on par with the best Sayulita has to offer.

I especially love their Burrata and aged Prosciutto. I would happily visit just to share this dish as a snack with a friend. The pastas are superb, and their Aperol Spritz is one of the best I’ve tasted in Mexico.

4. La Rustica. La Rustica is a strong contender in this category and has been a local favorite for years. Their wood-fired oven pizzas are not large, but they are incredibly delicious and possibly my favorite pizza slice in town. The pastas remind me of dishes I’ve enjoyed in small Italian villages.

5. Marcolino. Formerly Mamma Mia’s (location on map), Marcolino has expanded its kitchen into the adjacent space and significantly improved. Their pastas are homemade, and overall quality has improved greatly with the new kitchen. My only minor quibble is that they add cream to their Carbonara.

Best Far East/Asian Restaurants in Sayulita

For a long time, Asian cuisine was lacking in Sayulita. Then Achara arrived, one of the first proper Asian restaurants serving Thai food. Sadly, they closed, but fortunately, new spots have emerged over the years, and the trend has caught on. Finally, Sayulita offers decent Asian food options.

1. Henshin Sushi. Henshin Sushi (location on map) is part of the Casa Nawalli Resort and was one of Sayulita’s first spots to offer high-quality sushi. They offer an omakase-style dinner where the chef prepares a multi-course meal based on your preferences, budget, and appetite.

Reservations are required. They are only open for dinner from 5 pm to 10 pm and closed on Sunday and Monday.

2. Sushi N Surf. Sushi N Surf (location on map) is one of Sayulita’s newest Japanese restaurants, bringing another quality sushi option right to the center of town, just off the central plaza. Now, I no longer need to travel to Puerto Vallarta for sushi. I also appreciate their 10% discount for locals and 15% for those working in the local restaurant industry.

3. Yoku Dekita. After years of limited Japanese food options, new spots are now opening rapidly. Yoku Dekita (location on map) is a food truck serving Japanese dishes, including sushi nigiri and a few rolls. While it might not suit everyone, the quality is decent.

4. Paku Paku. Proper Japanese ramen has always been missing in Sayulita. While a few places have attempted it, they weren’t quite authentic. Paku Paku (location on map) comes a bit closer to authentic ramen.

It’s Japanese-themed but serves a mix of Japanese/Korean food like gyozas, yakisoba, rice with kimchi, and sushi. It’s now part of Mucho Bueno.

Best Coffee Shops in Sayulita

Coffee preferences are highly personal, and this category could spark endless debate. However, these are my personal favorite coffee spots in Sayulita.

1. Miscelanea. Miscelanea (location on map) is my go-to workspace and coffee shop. It’s tucked away, with only a small sign next to Emelianos. This coffee shop would fit perfectly into the coffee scenes of Portland or Melbourne. You can order flat whites and drip coffee filtered through Chemex or V60 filters, among other options. For me, it’s the best coffee in town.

2. Paninos Window. This small walk-up window (location on map) serves espresso like I find in Europe. It’s probably my most frequented coffee spot because it’s quick and tasty. I always order a double espresso with leche condensado, creating my own Vietnamese coffee.

4. Yah Yah. My favorite breakfast spot, Yah Yah, also serves a nice selection of coffee that’s as good as their peaceful atmosphere. It’s just a bit further walk than other options, which sometimes prevents me from visiting more often.

5. La Libreria. This quirky coffee stand is located outside La Libreria (location on map), a hidden gem of a bookstore where you can buy and sell used books. It’s definitely worth stopping by at least once. It’s a bit further from my usual location, but worth the short walk for a refreshing iced coffee.

Best Bars & Drinks in Sayulita

While I often prefer a cold beer or Michelada on the beach, sometimes I crave a well-made cocktail or mezcal. Note: Many restaurants also serve delicious drinks, but this list focuses specifically on drinking establishments.

1. Escondido. Escondido (location on map) should be more popular than it is. They make the most inventive and best cocktails in Sayulita.

Update: Sadly, Escondido has closed.

2. Lucid. If you appreciate a tucked-away spot (location on map) where you can enjoy Moscow mules in copper cups, Lucid is the place to go. It’s my happy hour destination between 4 pm and 8 pm. They offer a cucumber mojito for 60 pesos, a tangerine margarita for 50 pesos, and a michelada for 50 pesos, among other options.

While not beachfront, it offers a pleasant view down to the ocean.

3. La Zouave. La Zouave (location on map) is a popular hangout in Sayulita. They have a nice menu of margaritas made with either tequila or mezcal.

4. El Patio. More of a day-drinking spot, El Patio (location on map) serves excellent micheladas and margaritas right on the beach. When I want a pre-sunset drink, it’s usually either Lucid or El Patio.

5. Aloha. Aloha (location on map), another beachfront spot, has a small “garden” area perfect for watching the sunset (behind the mountain). I enjoy their drinks, especially their blended margaritas more than their on-the-rocks versions.

6. Cava. Cava (location on map) is a close second to Escondido for cocktails, delighting with creative cava and mezcal-based drinks. I recommend Cava if you’re seeking tequila or mezcal-based cocktails.

7. Sayulinda Rooftop Bar. Sayulinda Rooftop Bar (location on map) is one of the highest spots in the town center to watch the sunset, complete with a swimming pool, ping pong table, and hammocks.

The only requirement is purchasing a “day pass” to access the rooftop. It’s 600 pesos, but you receive 400 pesos in bar credits, making it a reasonable deal if you plan to spend the day lounging by the pool.

Best Desserts, Ice Cream & Pastries in Sayulita

This list is in no particular order. I frequent these places regularly between meals for a sweet treat or quick snack.

1. Casa Gourmet. Casa Gourmet (location on map) is a simple bakery offering my favorite pastry in town, if you can get them fresh from the oven. Their croissants are made in the classic French style. I try to avoid walking by this place because I invariably stop for a pan de chocolate.

2. Paris Delice. Paris Delice (location on map) is a small bakery owned and run by a Parisian woman. If you crave croissants, pain au chocolat, tarts, eclairs, palmiers, or other French pastries, you’ll love it here.

The croissants were slightly greasy when I tried them, so I plan to revisit to see if it was just an off batch. The pain au chocolat was large, puffy, and had a chewy texture that I enjoyed (though not very flaky or crispy).

3. Mexicolate. Mexicolate (location on map), a transplant from San Pancho, is a chocolate lover’s paradise. Try anything with spicy chocolate. Their hot chocolate is a rich breakfast treat.

My favorite is the cacao smoothie or smoothie bowl with strawberries (though my friends prefer banana). Another must-try item is their agua de cacao (cacao water), which is incredibly refreshing and flavorful.

4. Northswell Sabor Flavor. Northswell Sabor Flavor (location on map) is a newer plant-based and gluten-free spot run by a wonderful local. This charming shop offers surprisingly delicious gluten-free desserts that taste like their traditional counterparts.

They also source coffee beans locally from the Compostela mountain range in the Nayarit region. Check out their Instagram to see their current offerings.

5. Postres Tables in the Plaza. On the west side of the main square (location on map), you’ll find two tables laden with delicious cakes and cheesecakes. One table sells Costco cakes, and the other offers homemade options.

Guilty pleasure confession: I prefer Yvonchi’s cheesecakes, which are the store-bought ones. She has opened a cute storefront across from Tierra Viva (location on map), so you can now enjoy the same desserts in an air-conditioned setting.

6. Buonissimo. If you’re craving gelato, Buonissimo (location on map) is the place to go. I can’t get enough of the Ferrero Rocher flavor. Always opt for the double scoops.

7. Wakika. Wakika (location on map) is popsicle heaven. Everything is made with fresh fruit, with both dairy and non-dairy yogurt-based options. There are numerous unique combinations, but my favorite is the plain yogurt dipped in chocolate and covered in nuts. I also enjoy their yogurt soft-serve ice cream.

Private Chef & Catering in Sayulita

For special occasions or a luxurious dining experience at your villa, I recommend Chef Rodrigo Dragonetti at Mexihcah. Rodrigo offers a set menu or can create a custom meal for you and your guests. I’ve recommended Chef Rodrigo to many for special celebrations, and the feedback has been consistently rave reviews.

You can contact Chef Rodrigo via his Instagram or WhatsApp at +52 322 274 0616.

Other Must-Try Food Items in Sayulita

Lastly, here are a few other food items you might encounter around Sayulita. Try them if you come across them.

1. Banana Bread. Beach vendors sell delicious, moist banana bread for 50 pesos. Don’t hesitate to buy one.

2. Churros. Freshly fried churro vendors are common. One cart is usually located just after crossing the bridge, and another in the plaza offers ‘relleno’ churros, filled with chocolate or caramel.

3. Ceviche. While it might seem questionable being scooped from a plastic bucket on the beach, I haven’t gotten sick from these ceviche tostadas.

4. Elote. Hot corn with mayonnaise, butter, chili, and lime – yum! Find it next to the OXXO at the corner of Avenida Revolución and Calle Gaviota. Another cart across the bridge is signed “Hay Elote.” It’s 20-25 pesos for whole corn or a cup topped with cheese, crema fresa, and your choice of salsas.

5. Marquesitas. These Mexican crepes will satisfy your sugar cravings, depending on your chosen fillings. Find a cart near the plaza and another by Cesaro.

6. Agua Fresca. Agua Fresca is the local, fresh version of juices, made with real fruits in a variety of delicious flavors. My favorites are maracuja (passion fruit) and jamaica (hibiscus).

In closing, I recommend bookmarking this list for your Sayulita trip. I haven’t included every single restaurant, as there are simply too many. Many small food stalls are also worth exploring, but impossible to include them all. Part of the fun is discovering places randomly.

You really can’t go wrong eating at any of the places I’ve mentioned. If you’re heading to Sayulita, don’t forget to check out my Ultimate Guide to Sayulita.
