A vibrant display of Venezuelan arepas at Carolicious, Somerville
My own introduction to the delights of Venezuelan cuisine, particularly the iconic arepa, happened serendipitously. A fortunate turn of events led me to a cooking class featuring Las Carolinas, affectionately known as Carolicious, hosted at the Foundation Kitchen on Washington Street. That experience ignited a passion that continues to this day, inspiring my own arepa creations at home. Yet, these homemade attempts pale in comparison to the authentic flavors and textures offered by Carolicious.
What sets Carolicious apart is their commitment to flavor-packed dishes, highlighted by their signature basil sauce that adds a creamy richness to every bite. Importantly, all offerings are gluten-free and cater to diverse dietary preferences, with both meat-inclusive and vegetarian/vegan options readily available.
Beyond their exceptional arepas, the Pabellón Bowl is another standout. This dish is a harmonious blend of rice, beans, your choice of savory pork, chicken, or vegetables, sweet plantains, fresh pico de gallo, and creamy mozzarella, all generously drizzled with their signature basil sauce. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, the optional hot sauce adds an extra layer of complexity. The Pabellón Bowl truly lives up to its description – a symphony of flavors that dance on your palate.
To enhance the Carolicious experience, pair your meal with a refreshing local beer from Aeronaut Brewing Co. Enjoy your culinary journey in their inviting outdoor courtyard, creating a perfect blend of food and atmosphere.
