El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank Expands to Combat Food Insecurity in West El Paso

El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank, a leading non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating food insecurity in the Borderland region, has announced the location of its new food distribution and operations center in West El Paso. This strategic expansion marks a significant step in the organization’s ongoing efforts to address the critical needs of food-insecure residents in underserved areas.

The 14.7-acre site in West El Paso will significantly enhance El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank’s capacity to provide emergency food services. The new facility is strategically located to improve accessibility for residents in Canutillo, Nuway, and Vinton, as well as Westway and neighborhoods extending towards Sunland Park. This expansion is particularly crucial as the organization highlights that approximately 35 percent of El Paso County residents are currently facing food insecurity.

This development directly responds to findings from the Texas Department of Agriculture, which identified gaps in support from the Emergency Food Assistance Program in the western parts of El Paso. Susan Goodell, CEO of El Pasoans Fighting Hunger, emphasized the importance of community feedback in driving this expansion. “We have listened to the voices of our neighbors on the westside, and we understand the importance of being closer and more accessible to meet their needs,” Goodell stated. “This expansion demonstrates our continuous commitment to making a real difference for our most vulnerable neighbors struggling with hunger.”

The forthcoming Westside facility, anticipated to be fully operational within three years, will feature essential infrastructure to streamline food bank operations. Plans include a large warehouse for efficient food storage, a dedicated food processing and distribution center, and a central hub for volunteer activities. These components are designed to optimize the food bank’s ability to receive, process, and distribute food to those in need effectively.

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar played a key role in securing initial funding for the project, obtaining $800,000 through the federal FY24 Community Project Funding process for site development and construction. Despite this significant federal support, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank emphasizes that community support remains vital to realizing the full potential of the new Westside facility. The organization is actively seeking donations from the local community, businesses, and partners to ensure the successful completion of this critical project. Individuals and businesses interested in supporting El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank can visit their website or contact them directly to learn more about donation and volunteer opportunities.
