Tyson Foods Ups Investment in Amarillo Beef Plant, Bolstering Local Food Economy

Amarillo, TX – August 18, 2022 – Tyson Foods is doubling down on its commitment to Amarillo, Texas, announcing a significant $200 million investment in its beef processing plant. This major upgrade is set to enhance operational efficiencies, significantly improve the work environment for its 4,000 team members, and further solidify Amarillo’s position as a key player in the food industry.

The ambitious project, slated to commence this fall and reach completion by 2024, involves a substantial 143,000 square-foot expansion of the existing facility. This expansion is primarily dedicated to creating state-of-the-art team member well-being areas, including modernized locker rooms, a spacious cafeteria, and updated office spaces. Beyond employee amenities, the investment will also revamp and expand the plant’s operational floor, incorporating advanced technologies and automation to streamline processes and boost productivity within this critical food production hub.

While the upgrade isn’t projected to create new jobs directly, it underscores Tyson Foods’ long-term commitment to its existing Amarillo workforce, who collectively earn $180 million in annual payroll. This investment signals a strong belief in Amarillo as a strategic location for food production and processing.

Kevin Carter, Executive Director of the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation, lauded the announcement, stating, “This continued commitment from Tyson Foods is invaluable to Amarillo. Their $200 million investment confirms Tyson’s role as a major economic engine in our community for many years to come, and highlights their confidence in Amarillo’s future.”

The Amarillo plant stands as one of Tyson Foods’ largest beef processing facilities out of six nationwide. It is a vital component of the food supply chain, producing a range of fresh beef products, from standard cuts to specialty items, including ground beef patties. These products are then distributed to retail and foodservice clients across the United States and in international markets, making “Food In Amarillo” a phrase synonymous with quality and scale in the industry.

Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner echoed the positive sentiment, noting, “The economic vitality we’re witnessing in Potter County is truly exciting. Tyson Foods’ expansion is a testament to Amarillo’s favorable business environment, where established companies can prosper and grow. Their commitment speaks volumes about Amarillo’s potential.”

This strategic investment goes beyond just increasing production capacity. It prioritizes key areas such as team member safety, improved ergonomics, and enhanced food safety protocols. The integration of advanced automation and new technologies will contribute to a more efficient and safer working environment. Furthermore, the project incorporates sustainable practices with energy and water conservation improvements. Specialized water utility systems are designed to automate and reduce water consumption, aligning with Tyson Foods’ broader sustainability goals.

Shane Miller, Group President of Tyson Foods Fresh Meats, emphasized the dual benefit of the investment: “Our aim is to be the employer of choice in the food industry. While we’ve already made considerable investments in team member benefits, this project directly enhances the on-site experience for our Amarillo team. Simultaneously, these upgrades will significantly improve our operational efficiency, allowing us to better serve the growing demand for quality food.”

Tyson Foods’ dedication to Amarillo extends beyond its plant operations. In 2021, the company demonstrated its community engagement by contributing nearly $400,000 to local organizations, the Wesley Community Center and Maverick Boys and Girls Club of Amarillo. These funds were specifically allocated to renovate their facilities, providing crucial support for the children of Tyson team members working at the Amarillo beef plant, further embedding Tyson Foods within the Amarillo community and its food ecosystem.

Tyson Foods’ beef division has a substantial footprint in Texas, sourcing cattle from approximately 90 independent cattle suppliers across the state. The company’s operations in Texas are estimated to generate a total economic impact of nearly $3 billion, underscoring its significant contribution to the state’s food and agriculture sector and the overall “food in Amarillo” narrative.
