Is Fromm’s Dog Food Causing My Puppy’s Diarrhea?

Hello everyone,

We’re seeking some advice for our 6-month-old Golden Retriever, Cyrus (@cyrusthegreatgolden on IG). Lately, he’s been experiencing some gastrointestinal (GI) issues that we’re trying to figure out.

It began a few weeks ago with noticeably softer stools, though they were still formed. Just a few days later, this progressed into full-blown diarrhea – think applesauce consistency. Our dog walker suggested it might be due to his GI tract developing and his stomach simply adjusting as he grows. However, another week passed, and the diarrhea persisted and even became more frequent. Interestingly, Cyrus was still his usual playful and happy self, showing no other signs of illness. This prompted us to take him to the vet, concerned we might be missing something.

The veterinarian conducted a physical exam, including a rectal exam, and confirmed everything appeared normal. The initial recommendation was a bland diet of chicken and rice for a few days until his bowel movements normalized. Within 3-4 days of a twice-daily chicken and rice diet, Cyrus’s stools returned to normal! We were relieved and decided to slowly reintroduce his regular dog food, Fromm’s Gold Large Breed Puppy. Unfortunately, yesterday, he had another significant episode of diarrhea, similar to the previous ones. We returned to the vet, and this time, the vet suggested that Fromm’s dog food might be “too rich” for him and that we might need to consider a “blander” food option.

When we initially researched dog foods, Fromm’s stood out for its positives – a balanced diet and fewer recalls compared to many other brands. Now, it feels like we might have to reconsider, which is frustrating if he can no longer tolerate it. The vet mentioned Royal Canin, Blue Buffalo, and a Purina brand (the specific name escapes me at the moment) as potential alternatives.

Does anyone have suggestions for dog food brands that are not considered “too rich”? We’re interpreting “too rich” to possibly mean too high in protein (Fromm’s Gold has 28% protein). Is there a recommended protein to fiber ratio for dog food, particularly for puppies or dogs with sensitive stomachs like Cyrus?

Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated! We want to ensure Cyrus gets the best nutrition without these digestive upsets.
