Divine Nine Unite to Fight Hunger at Greater Chicago Food Depository During Black History Month

In a powerful display of unity and service, 91 members from the Divine Nine historically Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities convened at the Greater Chicago Food Depository for the third annual Divine Nine Super Repack competition. This impactful event, held during Black History Month, saw these organizations channeling their commitment to social justice into direct action against food insecurity affecting communities across Chicago and Cook County.

The partnership between the Divine Nine and the Greater Chicago Food Depository is a natural fit, driven by a shared mission to combat hunger and uplift communities. “The Food Depository believes that everyone deserves access to food and actively works to make that a reality,” stated Waldo E. Johnson, a Food Depository board member and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. “I take every opportunity to support that mission because it truly makes a difference.” His words underscore the profound impact of collective action in addressing food disparities.

Tanisha Jones, a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., further emphasized the spirit of service driving the Divine Nine’s involvement: “To me, service means giving back to the community. I believe in loving others, and part of loving others is serving them when they need help.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the Divine Nine, whose members are acutely aware of the disproportionate impact of food insecurity on communities of color. Their volunteer efforts at the Greater Chicago Food Depository are a tangible response to this critical issue.

Beyond the Super Repack competition, the Divine Nine are extending their commitment through the Community Table Challenge, a fundraising initiative running throughout Black History Month. This challenge aims to provide thousands of meals for Chicagoans facing hunger, amplifying the impact of their service. Individuals can still contribute to this vital cause by donating to the Community Table Challenge until February 28 at https://lnkd.in/gRGpXcrX.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Divine Nine organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., demonstrate the power of collaboration in tackling food insecurity and honoring the legacy of service during Black History Month.
