Discovering Delicious Halal Street Food: A Memphis Food Truck Adventure

Hey food lovers! It’s your favorite food enthusiast back again, diving deep into the vibrant food truck scene of our city. This time, my culinary compass pointed me towards Cooper Young, to a truck that’s been creating quite a buzz – Quasi Halal Asian Street Food. Officially named Quasi Halal Asian Street Food, this brightly colored truck is hard to miss and promises an exciting take on Halal Street Food.

Located at the Cooper Young farmers market, Quasi Halal’s menu might seem a little cryptic at first glance, but fear not, they’ve got you covered with pictures! For someone like me who appreciates visual aids, especially when exploring new cuisines, this was a definite plus.

Diving into the Halal Street Food Menu

On this visit, I decided to try their Chicken Satay combo, a classic street food dish. For those unfamiliar, Chicken Satay is essentially grilled chicken skewers served with a rich peanut sauce. And kudos to Quasi Halal for checking about peanut allergies before I even placed my order – a thoughtful touch! The combo also includes a side of fried rice, rounding out the meal.

I also couldn’t resist ordering the coconut shrimp. It’s always exciting to find unique offerings, and coconut shrimp definitely fits the bill.

Chicken Satay: Taste Over Appearance

Now, let’s talk about the Chicken Satay. I’ll be honest, its appearance might be a tad intimidating for picky eaters, especially kids. But trust me on this, you absolutely need to look past the visuals and focus solely on the taste. As someone who is very visually driven when it comes to food, this was a small hurdle for me to overcome, but so glad I did!

The chicken itself was cooked perfectly, tender and flavorful. The peanut sauce was where things got really interesting. It had the texture of crunchy peanut butter but surprised me with a teriyaki-like flavor profile, infused with peanuts. It was unique and quite enjoyable. In fact, I think this peanut sauce would be amazing as a dipping sauce for other dishes too! That Southern love for gravy in me was wishing for a side of extra sauce.

The fried rice was another pleasant surprise. It was noticeably sweeter than your typical fried rice, packed with plenty of greens and onions. Seriously, this rice was addictive! If you visit Quasi Halal, trying the fried rice is non-negotiable.

Coconut Shrimp: A Tropical Treat

The coconut shrimp is a must-try for coconut enthusiasts. Generously coated in coconut, it’s a delightful tropical treat. It’s not something you find on every street food menu, so it was great to see Quasi Halal offering this unique item.

Final Verdict: Is Quasi Halal Worth Trying?

So, would I recommend Quasi Halal as a must-try halal street food experience in Memphis? Absolutely! It’s a fantastic option if you’re looking for something different and unique. Growing up in South Memphis, my experience with Asian cuisine was limited, so Quasi Halal was a refreshing and welcome culinary adventure.

The prices are reasonable, and I definitely didn’t feel like I overspent for the quality and experience. I believe exploring food from different cultures is incredibly important, and Quasi Halal offers a delicious and accessible way to expand your palate.

To track down Quasi Halal and experience this halal street food for yourself, follow their Facebook page for their latest locations. You can often find them at Ghost River Brewing Co., among other spots. Go explore and enjoy the flavors!
