Austin, Texas, is a culinary hotspot with a food scene as diverse and vibrant as the city itself. As a long-time Austin resident, I’ve seen our food landscape evolve into something truly special. Forget run-of-the-mill Italian or Asian – Austin shines with its unique takes on barbecue, innovative fusion cuisine, mouthwatering Tex-Mex, incredible food trucks, and, of course, the iconic breakfast taco. So, if you’re planning a visit, here’s my curated list of must-try food in Austin, blending tourist favorites with local gems.
BBQ Bliss: The Heart of Texas Cuisine
Interstellar BBQ: My Top Pick
Interstellar BBQ is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite BBQ joint in Austin. Located a bit north of the typical tourist trail, it’s worth the trek and potentially a 2-hour wait (especially on weekends after Texas Monthly named them the second-best BBQ in Texas!). Trust me, the wait is justified.
On weekdays, the line is shorter (around an hour), making it a perfect time to indulge in their incredible brisket taco, melt-in-your-mouth pork belly bites, succulent pork ribs, and flavorful seasonal sausages. Don’t skip the off-menu frito pie – it’s a game-changer! And the best part? The beans are complimentary!
Micklethwait Craft Meats: BBQ with Amazing Sides
Micklethwait is another top-tier BBQ spot, though it used to be known for shorter wait times. Now, expect around 40 minutes to an hour on weekends. What truly sets Micklethwait apart is its selection of outstanding sides. While their BBQ is above average, I still lean towards Interstellar. Be sure to ask about their Brisket Nachos (not on the online menu) and their delicious Frito pie.
LA Barbecue: Sandwich Perfection
If you’re craving a BBQ sandwich, LA Barbecue is an excellent choice. The BBQ quality rivals Micklethwait, and their pickles are exceptional. Their sides are also fantastic. Expect about an hour wait here. My strategy? I often drive to both Micklethwait and LA Barbecue and choose based on the shorter line.
Terry Black’s Barbecue: Consistent and Convenient
Terry Black’s, also found in Dallas, has become a hugely popular Austin destination, especially on Barton Springs Road. Even with long lines, they move incredibly fast, usually clocking in around 20 minutes on a busy Saturday. The only potential snag is finding a clean table.
I recommend their sausage, beef rib, and brisket. I’m also a fan of their creamed corn and mac and cheese sides. While it might not be the absolute best BBQ, Terry Black’s offers great consistency and a shorter wait for authentic Texas BBQ.
Honorable Mention: Franklin Barbecue
While I haven’t personally waited in the infamous 3-4 hour line at Franklin Barbecue, I’ve tasted their BBQ as takeout and at festivals. Their brisket has earned a stellar reputation, and while it’s good, I wouldn’t personally wait hours for it. Takeout requires ordering well in advance. In my opinion, Interstellar provides a superior BBQ experience.
Taco Time: Breakfast Tacos and Beyond
Cuantos Tacos: For the True Taco Connoisseur
Cuantos Tacos is fantastic. If someone claims Cuantos as their favorite, you know they know their tacos. The tacos are smaller, served on nixtamalized tortillas. I recommend trying one of each to experience the full range of flavors, although some fillings can taste similar. It’s definitely one of my top Austin spots.
Veracruz All Natural: The Breakfast Taco Staple
For breakfast tacos, Veracruz All Natural is a classic choice. Their migas tacos are incredibly popular, and they have locations throughout Austin. Their new Veracruz Fonda in the Mueller Area offers a sit-down brunch experience. As a tourist, you can’t go wrong here. Also, try their Concha!
Granny’s Tacos: Homemade Goodness
While Veracruz Tacos was started by the parents of the current owners, Granny’s Tacos is my personal favorite for breakfast tacos. Their delicious corn tortillas set them apart. I’m not usually a mole fan, but their RICO tacos with chicken mole and rice are incredibly delicious. The chilaquiles taco is popular, but I’m a huge fan of their homemade tortillas. Be prepared for a wait, but it’s worth it.
Discada: A Unique Taco Experience
Discada is tied for my favorite taco spot in Austin. They serve a single type of taco with discada filling – a slow-cooked mixture of meat and veggies. These tacos are small, and I can easily devour 5-10 in one sitting. The pink salsa packs heat, complementing the savory meat, pineapple, and onion.
Un Mundo De Sabor: Consistent Excellence
Un Mundo De Sabor is also tied for my favorite taco spot. Their consistency is what I love – all their tacos are delicious. If I had to pick one, I’d recommend their carnitas tacos: tender, crispy fried pork cubes with pickled onions and avocado. Their vegan mushroom tacos are also surprisingly good. You can’t go wrong here!
Tex-Mex Temptations: More Than Just Ground Beef and Queso
ElDorado Cafe: My Tex-Mex Revelation
Here’s a confession: I wasn’t a big Tex-Mex fan until I discovered ElDorado Cafe. After years of trying seemingly indistinguishable spots with ground meat and queso, ElDorado changed everything. Their enchiladas and Tex-Mex are the best in Austin, cooked to perfection with fresh ingredients.
I highly recommend the Dartbowl enchiladas: cheese enchiladas topped with short rib chili, jack cheese, queso, red onions, fried egg, and jalapeños. The flavors are incredible. I also loved their Joes Happy plate, Salsa Sampler, and ElDorado Burrito. Their breakfast menu is impressive too, especially the Glorias Chilaquiles. And don’t miss their smoky Salsa X! Reservations are recommended to avoid long waits.
Tamale House East: Ambiance and Tex-Mex
Tamale House East is my go-to spot, especially when I have visitors. The beautiful patio garden is perfect for photos. While the food might not be quite as delicious as ElDorado, its location on East 6th Street makes it a popular choice for experiencing Tex-Mex and capturing great pictures. Try their tamales (chicken with mole or chili sauce) and the Enchiladas Verde.

Odd Duck redefines traditional dining with its farm-to-table approach and focus on local, seasonal ingredients. Each inventive small plate and expertly crafted dish is a delightful surprise. The ever-changing menu ensures a fresh, exciting dining experience. With its warm ambiance and curated drink selection, Odd Duck embodies Austin’s innovative food scene.

Lutie’s Garden Restaurant: Estate Dining
Lutie’s is a stunning restaurant located on an estate. Must-try dishes include the petit aioli, Kouign Amann Ice Cream, Estate Bread, and delta blues rice. Avoid the steak. Reservations can be challenging.
Birdie’s: Romantic Pasta Nights
Located in East Austin, Birdie’s offers a seasonal menu and counter service. It’s perfect for a romantic night out, especially if you love pasta. Despite the counter service and potential wait, Birdie’s compensates with exceptional food. The wait can be long due to wine pairing samples, but the food is worth it.
Kemuri Tatsu-ya: Japanese-Texas BBQ Fusion
Kemuri Tatsu-ya offers a vibrant Japanese-Texas BBQ fusion. The drinks and eats exude an energetic vibe. I enjoy the yakitori and street corn. If available, the chili cheese Takoyaki is a crowd-pleaser. This Tatsuya location is my favorite due to its distinctive Japanese fusion dishes.
Uchiko: Solid and Delicious
Uchiko is known for its solid menu and delicious food. The Hama Chili combines Japanese and Texan flavors. The Foie Gras is rich and indulgent. Don’t miss their Happy Hour bites. Uchiko guarantees an exceptional dining experience.
Fonda San Miguel: Elevated Mexican
Fonda San Miguel has been an Austin institution for years. Many claim their fajitas are the best in town. While I haven’t tried their fajitas, I have enjoyed their remarkable brunch buffet. The restaurant’s enchanting ambiance and delectable food make it a must-visit.
Intero Restaurant: Contemporary Italian
Intero Restaurant is a fabulous contemporary Italian restaurant in Austin. Make sure to try their focaccia, bucatini, and brown butter cake. With its impeccable cuisine and inviting ambiance, it’s a must-visit. They are sustainable and farm to table with a rotating menu.
Stellar Standouts: Can’t-Miss Culinary Gems
Dee Dee ATX: Thai Street Food Perfection
Dee Dee ATX has won my heart with their Pad Kaprow, arguably the best in Austin. This stir-fried ground pork dish with holy basil or Thai basil is a must-try. Served with rice and a fried egg, it creates a perfect harmony of flavors. Their dishes offer a spicy kick that is still enjoyable. Their papaya salad and moo ping are also exquisite. If you’re lucky, you might get to savor their seasonal mango sticky rice.
Spicy Boys: The Chicken Sandwich Champion
My love for Spicy Boys runs deep. Their OG sandwich, packed with sweet chili honey, papaya relish, and Thai basil ranch, is the best chicken sandwich in Austin. And their tots are heavenly!
Ramen Del Barrio: Mexican-Japanese Fusion
Experience a unique Mexican-Japanese fusion at Ramen Del Barrio. Despite its offbeat location, it’s a must-visit for fusion ramen, such as the carnitas shoyu and seasonal specials. Don’t miss out on their crispy karagge.
JewBoy Burgers: Casual and Crowd-Pleasing
JewBoy Burgers is an ideal spot to bring visitors. With ample outdoor seating and a dog-friendly patio, it offers a welcoming environment. The portions are generous, and their shareable queso is a must-try. While the burgers are solid, the flavorful burritos are the real hidden gems.
The Thicket Austin: Food Truck Paradise
The Thicket is the ultimate food truck park in Austin. With a diverse range of food options, it’s perfect for gathering friends and embarking on a culinary adventure. While all the food trucks deliver exceptional fare, I have a special affinity for Song la, Un Mundo De Sabor, Arti Pasta, and Brooklyn Breakfast Shop.
Webberville Food Truck Park: Coffee, Kolaches, and More
If you’re visiting Austin, you absolutely must visit the Webberville Food Truck Park. Standouts include Desnudo Coffee, Kerlaches (for amazing kolaches), and Veracruz tacos.
1618 Asian Fusion: Group-Friendly Feast
I have a special love for 1618 Asian Fusion! This place is ideal for large groups, offering fantastic drinks and delightful food. Try the whole red snapper, duck curry, tom kha fried rice, and soup dumplings. Don’t miss their flambeverest cheesecake!
Better Half Coffee & Cocktails: Relaxed Hangout
Better Half is the perfect place to relax and enjoy time with friends. With a spacious outdoor area and a solid food menu, it’s an ideal hangout spot. Their burger is one of the best in town, and their chicken sandwich is also mouthwatering.
Loro: BBQ Meets Asian
Loro is excellent for large groups, offering ample outdoor seating and a welcoming atmosphere for families with kids. This spot combines BBQ and Asian cuisine. Don’t miss their tasty corn fritters and seasonal specials.
Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden: Coffee, Beer, and BBQ
Cosmic has specialty-brewed coffee, beer, and live music. It’s dog-friendly and home to the popular BBQ spot, Leroy and Lewis.
Sign Bar: Nostalgic Bites
While not primarily known for its food, Sign Bar serves as a nostalgic collection and memorial for old Austin, allowing visitors to browse through signs from classic establishments. They currently offer food trucks and plan to expand their food options.
