Starting with dessert might seem unconventional, but my first memorable food experience outside of campus dining was indulging in ice cream. As an ice cream enthusiast, despite being lactose intolerant, I was eager to explore New Haven’s sweet offerings. Arethusa Dairy Farm quickly became a favorite. Their ice cream is incredibly creamy and rich, and the staff are always welcoming. The generous scoops for the price are also a major plus! My personal recommendation is the strawberry flavor. Beyond ice cream, Arethusa also offers a tempting selection of cheeses, milk, and grilled cheese sandwiches, perfect for a light sit-down snack. While I haven’t found a perfect replica of a NYC bagel yet, The Pantry has more than compensated in the breakfast and brunch department. In my opinion, The Pantry is among the best diners I’ve ever visited. Located in East Rock, it offers a charming sit-down atmosphere with outdoor seating available. The must-try item? Without a doubt, the cinnamon roll pancakes. As you can tell from my expression in the photo below, they are my absolute favorite! The Pantry is the ideal spot for a relaxed sit-down breakfast or brunch, offering classic diner fare in a cozy setting.
The Great New Haven Pizza Debate: Sit Down and Decide
Sally’s vs. Pepe’s?
When discussing New Haven cuisine, pizza inevitably takes center stage, and the legendary debate of Pepe’s versus Sally’s begins. Having tried both, I lean slightly towards Frank Pepe’s, especially for their summer tomato pie. Trying at least one of New Haven’s famous pizzerias is practically a rite of passage when you’re here. Beyond Pepe’s and Sally’s, Bar and Modern Apizza are also excellent sit-down pizza options. Recently, I discovered 163 Pizza, which I might even prefer over Sally’s! Each pizzeria provides a unique sit-down dining experience, from the historic charm of Pepe’s to the modern vibes of Bar. Mamoun’s Falafel: Mediterranean, $
Why I choose to sit down here (or take out): Mamoun’s is incredibly budget-friendly and delicious for a quick sit-down meal or takeout. It’s open late, making it a convenient option for late-night cravings. While often chosen for takeout, they do have limited seating for a quick bite.

Rubamba: Latinx/Latin fusion, $$
Why I choose to sit down here: Rubamba introduced me to the wonders of Colombian arepas, and I’ve been hooked ever since. The flavors are authentic, and the maduros (sweet plantains) bring back comforting memories of home-cooked meals. The sit-down atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming.
