Sol Food San Rafael: Experience Authentic Puerto Rican Cuisine in Marin

Moving can be bittersweet. As I packed my life into boxes, leaving San Rafael was definitely on my mind. While I’m excited for my new chapter, reflecting on my time in Marin County brings up some highlights I’ll genuinely miss. It’s true that Marin may not always be the easiest fit for everyone, especially if you’re not in the typical demographic. Finding late-night dining or feeling like part of a younger crowd can sometimes be a challenge. However, San Rafael holds its own charm, and discovering its gems has been a pleasure. From scenic hiking trails with my mom’s dogs and quick trips to the peaceful landscapes of West Marin, to the unique finds at local consignment stores and the delightful Fairfax Scoop in summer, San Rafael has offered unexpected pleasures. But if I had to pinpoint the one thing I’ll miss most about San Rafael, it’s undoubtedly Sol Food. For anyone seeking truly authentic and vibrant Puerto Rican food, Sol Food in San Rafael is an absolute must-visit.

Sol Food is the brainchild of Sol Hernandez, a San Rafael native who brought the genuine flavors of Puerto Rico to her hometown. After immersing herself in the island’s culinary traditions while living there, Sol returned to Marin with a mission: to share her passion for Puerto Rican cuisine. The original Sol Food San Rafael location, affectionately known as “the small one” by locals, is a cozy spot nestled on the corner of 4th and Lincoln. Initially, grabbing a quick bite was easy, but its growing popularity speaks volumes. Now, you might find a bustling crowd, a testament to its delicious offerings. For those seeking a bit more space, Sol Food has expanded to a larger location on Lincoln Avenue, often called “the big one,” where finding a seat is generally easier.

Stepping into either Sol Food San Rafael location is like being transported to Puerto Rico. Sol has masterfully created an atmosphere that’s both inviting and authentically reminiscent of the island. Imagine vibrant, colorful décor with shutters and chairs that evoke the Caribbean spirit. Details like green plantains acting as napkin holders and lush, leafy plants adorning every available counter space contribute to the restaurant’s unique charm. The air is filled with lively, upbeat music, adding to the energetic ambiance. One of the standout features, particularly at the larger Lincoln Avenue location, is the communal tables. These tables foster a sense of community, bringing together a diverse mix of people. You might find yourself sharing a table with local teachers, students, artists, and residents from all walks of life, all connecting over plates of flavorful pink beans and rice and other Puerto Rican specialties. It’s this unique blend of delicious, authentic food and a welcoming, communal atmosphere that truly sets Sol Food San Rafael apart, making it a beloved culinary destination in Marin County and a place I will sincerely miss.
