Coborn’s, Inc., a Midwest-based grocery chain, has announced a significant expansion into a new state with the acquisition of Sullivan’s Foods. This strategic move marks Coborn’s entry into Illinois, bringing its century-long legacy of grocery excellence to the northern and central parts of the state. The purchase agreement, finalized recently, includes 11 Sullivan’s Foods grocery stores, along with several other retail business units previously owned and operated by the Sullivan family.
“The Sullivan family has cultivated a remarkable chain of stores, deeply rooted in the communities they serve. Their commitment to quality and customer service aligns perfectly with Coborn’s values,” stated Chris Coborn, Chairman and CEO of Coborn’s, Inc. “We are excited to welcome Sullivan’s Foods into our family and extend our operational philosophy, honed over 102 years, to these new locations.”
This acquisition signifies Coborn’s first venture into Illinois, presenting both opportunities and learning curves. Chris Coborn acknowledged the geographical expansion and the importance of integrating the Sullivan’s Foods team into the Coborn’s organization. Approximately 800 employees associated with Sullivan’s Foods, encompassing grocery stores, a convenience store/fuel center, three Ace Hardware stores, a central office, and a warehouse, will transition to Coborn’s, Inc. Crucially, the acquired stores will continue to operate under the well-established Sullivan’s Foods banner, ensuring continuity and familiarity for local customers.
Sullivan’s Foods: A Legacy of Local Grocery Excellence
The story of Sullivan’s Foods is deeply intertwined with the Sullivan family’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to the grocery retail sector. Founded in 1967 by John and June Sullivan, Sullivan’s Foods began as a single store in Savanna, Illinois. John Sullivan’s journey in the grocery industry started with a part-time job as a meat cutter during his military service. Upon returning to his hometown of Stockton, Illinois, and later moving to Platteville, Wisconsin, he honed his skills and gained invaluable experience in grocery operations.
In 1967, the Sullivans took the leap to purchase their own grocery store in Savanna. Through strategic expansions, starting with buying out a partner and building a new store, Sullivan’s Foods grew steadily. By 1973, they added a second location in Stockton, John’s hometown. Further expansion waves in 1978 and 1980 saw the acquisition of four more stores, solidifying Sullivan’s Foods as a prominent regional grocery provider.
Shared Values and Seamless Transition for Sullivan’s Foods
Sullivan’s Foods‘ decision to join Coborn’s, Inc. was driven by a strong alignment in values and operational philosophies. Susie Dauphin, Secretary and Property Manager of Sullivan’s Foods, emphasized the careful consideration behind the sale. “Our family recognized Coborn’s long-standing reputation and felt a deep connection with their values. Their operational standards, community engagement, company culture, and commitment to employees resonated strongly with us,” Dauphin stated. This shared ethos promises a smooth transition for Sullivan’s Foods employees and customers alike.
Looking Ahead: Coborn’s and Sullivan’s Foods Together
The acquisition is anticipated to be finalized in early May, pending standard closing conditions. Upon completion, Coborn’s, Inc.’s grocery portfolio will expand to 77 locations across six states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, Michigan, and now Illinois. The company’s total business units will encompass approximately 135, including grocery stores, liquor stores, fuel centers, pharmacies, and franchised restaurants. Sullivan’s Foods will maintain its existing supplier relationship with Associated Wholesale Grocers (AWG), ensuring continued product availability and operational consistency. This acquisition represents an exciting new chapter for both Coborn’s and Sullivan’s Foods, promising continued commitment to quality, community, and customer satisfaction in the Illinois grocery market.
