Weruva Dog Food: A Deliciously Low-Fat Solution for Pancreatitis and Sensitive Stomachs

Discovering the right dog food can feel like navigating a maze, especially when your furry friend faces health challenges. Recently, my blue Weimaraner, Maisie, was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis. The news came after a day of vomiting, an unusual occurrence for her, prompting an immediate vet visit. Tests confirmed inflammation beyond just the pancreas, making a low-fat diet crucial. For anyone familiar with canine pancreatitis, you understand the gravity – high-fat foods are simply not an option.

Initially, my veterinarian suggested a prescription canned food, a standard recommendation for managing fat intake. While I appreciated the vet’s caution, I hesitated. Prescription diets often contain ingredients I’m not entirely comfortable with, and let’s be honest, they can be quite expensive. Adding to the complexity, Maisie also has atypical Addison’s disease, making her an exceptionally picky eater – think “Toy Poodle picky” on a whole new level! Palatability is key, and many prescription diets, in my experience, aren’t exactly gourmet.

Examining the “low fat” prescription food, I noted a 7.4% fat content. I hadn’t considered typical premium canned dog foods, assuming their fat content would be too high. Fat is essential for energy and flavor, making food appealing to even the pickiest eaters like Maisie. However, for her condition, high fat could be detrimental. My heart still aches remembering Roma, my Golden Retriever, who tragically succumbed to pancreatitis after a misdiagnosis, despite intensive care. Finding a truly low-fat, palatable option felt critical and challenging.

Then, the solution was staring me right in the face! I recalled some leftover pouches of Weruva Dogs in the Kitchen dog food. Weruva had kindly provided these for our Pooch Party in conjunction with the 8th Annual NY Dog Film Festival. I’ve long admired Weruva for their human-edible cat food, a staple on my show DOG TALK® (and Kitties, Too!), which Weruva has generously sponsored for a decade. I’d always perceived their dog food as geared towards smaller breeds, like my sister’s Brussels Griffons who are devoted Weruva eaters.

Curiosity piqued, I checked the “Goldie Lox” Dogs in the Kitchen pouch. To my utter surprise and relief, the fat content was a mere 3%! This was significantly lower than the prescription “low fat” option! Even better, Maisie devoured it. A small 3 oz pouch mixed with her kibble vanished in moments – a resounding success!

My exploration of Weruva’s low-fat offerings didn’t stop there. I ventured onto Chewy and ordered 14 oz cans of Weruva Dog Food. The Marbella Paella variety revealed an astonishingly low crude fat content of just 1.4%. The price point is higher, admittedly, but scrutinizing the ingredient list – and noting what’s not included – justifies the cost. You’re paying for quality, human-grade ingredients that prioritize your dog’s health.

For fellow dog owners grappling with pancreatitis or the need for a genuinely low-fat diet, Weruva dog food is a revelation. It’s a palatable, nutritious, and remarkably low-fat food option made with ingredients so good, you could eat them yourself. Sometimes, the best solutions are right under our noses! Give Weruva a try and see the difference it can make for your dog’s health and well-being.
