Have you ever listened to an album that sounded so good it could be a menu? For fans of the legendary underground hip-hop artist MF DOOM, that’s exactly the vibe of his critically acclaimed album, “MM..FOOD”. Released in 2004, this isn’t just another hip-hop record; it’s a 15-track culinary journey disguised as a rap album, filled with food-themed titles that are as quirky and clever as DOOM himself. This album sparked a unique project: transforming the MM..FOOD tracklist into a real-life cookbook.

The mastermind behind this project is a chef with a background as unique as DOOM’s rhymes. After years in the demanding New York City restaurant scene and even running a BBQ joint, a passion project was born: Music & Food. This website explores the delicious intersection of music and food, driven by a love for menu puns that predates even popular shows like Bob’s Burgers. The goal? To create recipes inspired by music, initially sparked by the Talking Heads album, More Songs About Buildings & Food.

While searching for fresh inspiration, a crate-digging session on Spotify uncovered the perfect muse: MF DOOM’s “MM..FOOD”. The album presented itself as a ready-made menu, a collection of food-related song titles just begging to be translated into actual dishes. Thus, the Cooking The Album sub-project was launched, dedicated to crafting recipes for each track on MM..FOOD, even the ones with more abstract culinary connections.

Despite Pitchfork’s respectable 7.5 rating, true fans know MM..FOOD deserves higher praise. It’s not your typical “food rap” album. Instead, DOOM delivers his signature stream-of-consciousness rhymes, filled with “quirky one-liners over tight beats,” as Pitchfork accurately noted. The album’s genius lies in its playful use of food as a theme, creating a listening experience that’s both satisfying and intellectually stimulating.

The tracklist itself reads like an eclectic menu, ranging from appetizers to desserts, and even a questionable shot recipe:

  • Beef Rap – Asian lettuce beef wraps
  • Hoe Cakes – Southern Johnnycakes
  • Potholderz – Chicken wings with mumbo sauce
